“Photographic Amusements” by Walter Woodbury – 1896 – Original 1st Ed. [SE] This is the original publication, not one of the reprints. The full title is: Photographic Amusements Including A Description of A Number of Novel Effects Obtainable With the Camera. There is a little confusion about the date. On one page it states copyright 1896 and on the Title page, 1897. Yet it makes no indication of being a 2nd printing. My assumption is the material was copyrighted in 1896 with the first printing in 1897. So you thought Photoshop was a new thing. Back in the 19th Century photographers were “modifying” their images in many ways. Walter Woodbury was the Editor of “The Photographic Times”, and the author of “The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Photography”, “Aristotypes and How to Make Them,” etc. etc. Published by The Scovill & Adams Co. of NY. This was an expensive book for its time, One Dollar. Today, the same relative value would be about $31. This book has been re-published a number of times, this is an original issue. 114 numbered pages plus more before the numbered pages and many after it with advertising. It shows many interesting things photographers did more than 120 years ago. The last pages contain advertisements for some of the “modern” photographic equipment of the day – fascinating.
